11 Leader FAQ - What is Camp Cooinda’s commitment to child safety?
Camp Cooinda is a child-safe organisation. All leaders complete child safety training, hold a valid Working With Children Check, provide referees that we verify, and commit to abiding by our Program Policies and Leader Code of Conduct. We’re committed to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment for all.
10 Leader FAQ - What do I need to bring as a leader?
We provide a full packing list when you’re accepted, including clothes for all weather, sleeping gear, a brimmed hat, personal items and any role-specific gear. Grab the packing list here.
9 Leader FAQ - What are the key dates for leaders this summer?
- Leader Training Weekend: Fri 28 – Sun 30 Nov 2025
- Camp One: Sat 27 Dec 2025 – Mon 5 Jan 2026
- Camp Two: Wed 7 Jan – Sat 17 Jan 2026
8 Leader FAQ - Can I choose which camp to lead at?
Yes. You can nominate your preference for Camp One, Camp Two or both in your application.
7 Leader FAQ - Can I just attend part of a camp?
Generally no. That said, it can be useful to have experienced leaders with specific skills come for key parts of the camp (during set-up and pack-down, or in the first few instruction days of camp where patrols are learning to boat safely). The training days are required for all leaders, unless you have an exemption from the Leader Selection Coordinator. This may be granted for experienced leaders who have completed the training on multiple previous occasions.
6 Leader FAQ - What is the time commitment for being a leader?
Leaders attend the two-night Leader Training Weekend in late November, the two preparation days before camp and the 8-day summer camp. Arrival and departure dates are set to allow for set-up, training and pack-down.
5 Leader FAQ - Do leaders get paid?
No. All our leaders are volunteers. Your reward is in building leadership and outdoor skills, forming lifelong friendships, and creating unforgettable experiences for young people.
4 Leader FAQ - What training does Camp Cooinda provide for leaders?
We provide hands-on residential training at Leader Training Weekend, and in the two days at camp before campers arrive. We also provide you with a Leaders’ Manual and program guides for specific roles. We also offer a $100 reimbursement for a current first aid certificate (HLTAID011 or higher) and ask leaders to complete a free online food safety course.
